Hello my name is Koa. I am suppose to share a little bit of who I am and how I came to be with you, but the truth is, I have a "black out" period... I do not know how I ended up in prison with a two year old sentence. And I only came to realize my name is Koa because the humans, (I think that's what they are called), are constantly calling me that.
I am one out of six other Retrievers, and the rumor in Puppyville is that with good behavior we will be given weekend furloughs. I look forward to these; I have seen some of the bigger dogs, that have been here longer, getting them and they return very excited with spectacular toys and shoes. So, in keeping with my curious nature I really want to sniff and chew as I explore what is found on the other side of this chain linked fence. I have two human handlers and they both tell me I am royalty and destined to be a great service dog, helping others. I do not know what service dog means, but I can tell you everyone treats me like royalty. I even have a purple harness; they tell me it's a royal color. I'm very friendly, love to please humans, am very playful and can keep up with the big dogs; I'm very cautious and observant. Be careful, if you leave anything near me, I will sniff it and chew on it; I'm normally very obedient, unless I'm distracted or want to learn about my environment on a sniffy walk. I can walk straight on the leash until I get distracted or stopped by humans to adore me... squirrel? If I'm writing this for my future caretaker, know that I love to bond with humans, have a good temper, say (bark) very little, relaxed, love to play, cuddle, easily entertained, love belly rubs, and may be little, but will eat like a horse if you like me. Treats, treat, treats!
Still growing and understand the world,

January 2020 Update
So last month I came into my teenager ways and it has not worked out as I thought. My loud barking and pulling on leash ways did not go well for me. Thankfully, I have a handler John who has demonstrated lots of patience with me as I go through this part of my young life. He loves and cares for me and constantly reminds me to be shelving and awesomest dog that he knows that I am and fell in love with. So I snap out of it and listen and things seem to go easier for me. I learned I have a lot of names from Koa monster, and my big nose (for smelling food) I was called Brian from Family Guy. I've never ever seen that cartoon, but my handler and some of the others just start giggling I just crack up inside. I also learned I am really fast, the other dogs cannot catch me. My handler encourages me to keep running and not let them catch me. I laugh inside knowing I am so fast. One other thing, I was praised by my handler John, Nicole, and Kate for being attentive and alert to my puppy raisers son when he was about to have a seizure. I just thought something was different so I acted on my instinct. I felt awesome inside knowing I was hoping my friend in need. Also, my puppy raiser is going through some medical issues. John my hander described it as chemo therapy. I have been comforting my puppy raiser for the past couple of weekends. I just love them so much and want to be at there service as much as possible. My handler John always tells me that 2 make this day. I also received a new toy the silver coyote, who I love to chew and toss around it makes John crack up when I play with my new toy. That's all for now...
December 2019 Update
This month was busy for me, I was able to learn how to tug on a handle that opened a door with kibble inside, it was like cool, let me try this again, and there they were, kibble! But this one time there was a dice bottle and my friend John asked me to bring it to him, so I did, that was really fun. I did this fun learning exercise a few times during the month. My hander John told me to stay inside for about a week so, he wanted to play and teach me a couple of things while we had time. I have a favorite toy named Billy Goat, but after I tore him up, my handler/ friend John sewed him up and called him Franken Billy, I think he said like Frankenstein, he was cracking up and so was I and I was so excite to play and make Franken Billy squeak really loud. WE could play and tug and John would be laugh so hard I think he screamed. I started laughing too, he and I can have lots of fun anywhere, he also makes learning fun, too. He sometimes praises me with a really high pitched voice by saying "good boy" and "you are so smart buddy." I believe we make a good team, he helps me and I help him when he sometimes gets anxious or sad about something, so I go over to him and put my mug on his cap and look at him and he pets me and says, "thanks Buddy I really needed that." He really loves me and will do anything for me. I had a wonderful time with my puppy raisers over my first Christmas holiday. There were lots of food and it was really nice. I had lots of fun and can't wait for the next one!
November 2019 Update
So this month I overheard them wanting me to have better manners when greeting others and not to be so distracted at new people and this new thing we-leash. I really like we-leash when my handler puts that sweet/ tasty white thing on leash, I grab it and wack around with my head, I want all to see that I can do it (I'm a big boy). My handler is getting better at understanding me. See I am really smart and do not always show my feelings, but he is getting good at reading my emotions, John is a good friend of mine, I love them.
I love chasing the kong around, my handler tosses it really far and I race after it as fast as I can. As everyone else watches or tries to chase it it with me, 9 times out of 10 I always win. I am really good.
What has been happening is they have been tying a rawhide and spreading peanut butter on the end of the attachment leash. I don't know what they expect from me because there seems to be a look of confusion on their faces when I get done chewing down the rawhide and licking off the peanut butter. If I'm doing something wrong, then why do they continue to reward me? Anyway, I enjoy playing. I like to take naps and I really love food!
October 2019 Update
Hey there, my name is Koa. This is my first update EVER! At the moment, I'm working on not eating so fast. My handler has taken our NLK9s educators' advice and is adding water to my breakfast and dinner. I'm slowing down a little bit because I can't eat food and drink water at the same time, so I must chew my food then swallow, or drink the water. I'm learning my colors too. I can recognize pink, blue, brown, yellow, white, black, and red. I'm getting pretty good at it and for some reason my handler looks surprised that I get them right. He gives me meats for doing something I love to do, which is to learn and expand my mind. I love playing with my buddies in the sprinklers and chasing them. It feels like we're playing tag and keep-away with our tugs. I love when I get to eat hot dogs. It's not all the time, but when I do get them, I'm so excited. That's what I've been up to. Check back next month for another update.
