Hello, my name is Nolan! Born on the day of April 6, in the year of 2016! I’m the oldest lad here but definitely not the slowest. My nickname is Bruno Mars because I love to shake it! Dancing is one of my favorite activities along with chasing balls and playing with my 5 best friends. I also enjoy learning skills that will one day help help my veteran or first responder in need. Whoever you are, here are a few things I am learning for you: I know how to brace, open and close doors, identify different objects and pick them up for you. I also heard my snuggling skills are amongst the best in the group. I can’t wait to meet you!
From Nolan's Handlers
“ I often think about how lucky I am to be partnered up with such a great dog. This past year has been an amazing experience I will remember for the rest of my life.....” - Ronnie
“ Nolan is a loving and affection dog. I love spending time with him and he will be a great service dog to a veteran.....”- Felix

Hey y’all, it’s Nolan! I’ve been busy on lots of outing with my puppy family. I go to church, Costco, and basketball games (I get really excited when out team scores). I’m also very patient and have learned to bark less. One of my special skills is taking off blankets. If I see you laying down with a blanket, I will be more than happy to help you remove it. My teachers are trying to help me learn to put the blanket back on, but taking them off is so much more fun! That’s all for now, I’ll see you next month.
February 2019 Update
Hey guys, it's Nolan! I got to do a lot of cool things this month! I went to church, Costco and also a farm. I was fun to hang out with all those different animals! I also went to the park with my puppy raisers and played fetch with some new friends! I've been working on settling, group attendance and other skills with my handlers, but they say that I'm pretty much Chuck Norris- I know it all and do it all. I hope that all of you have a great month, and make sure to check back in on my journey to becoming a service dog!
January 2019 Update
Happy Holidays everyone! This month has been an adventure. You all know Moose? The new chocolate puppy that thinks he is cuter than me? Yeah well I found out one weekend that he was going to start coming home with me and my weekend family. At first I wasn’t too happy about the news, but after one day of having him there it was awesome! I got to show him where I hang out, the girls rooms, where I potty outside, how many cuddles our family gives us, how we do the dishes… there were so many cool things. Now we are like two peas in a pod. I let him know I will help him and teach him as much as I can while I am still here, in order for him to make a great service dog someday. I think he has great potential. In other news, our team is growing at CTF. We have some news guys on the team (inmate handlers) and I have made it my mission to help them learn everything they need to know of Bond-Based Choice Teaching, seeing that I am the oldest and most wisest here. So far so good, they now understand how much I like to play ball and they have been doing lots of that with me. Also, they have been practicing their teaching skills on me…they can definitely keep working on those. Well, that's all for now! Bye everyone!
December 2018 Update
Yep that’s right, I am back! I want to make a special shout out to my best friend Ronnie Starbird, you will always be the greatest friend a dog could ask for. Thank you and I love you. Moose and I are going to make you proud. Currently I am just kicking back enjoying life and waiting on my future veteran or first responder. My most exciting adventure this month was going to the Veteran’s Day Parade in Salinas, CA. There were so many people and lots of cool big things that moved! I think me and my buddies were the most popular, everyone knew who we were and wanted to say hi to us. I have been able to come back to CTF and help all my friends who still have awhile until they graduate so I am able to be here and show them how it is done. I won’t ever forget the things Ronnie taught me but now it is Felix (my new handlers) turn to teach me new things. I am up for whatever it is he might have up his sleeve. Check in with me next month to hear how things are going! Thank you all for your support!
November 2018 Update
Hello, it’s me Nolan again! I am really excited for what is going on right now in this phase of my learning. I am going to boot camp next month which is where I will be placed with a veteran or first responder and graduate into a Service Dog. All my hard work is finally going to be used as real skills in real life with my person. In the meantime before I go I have been spending a lot of quality time with all my friends and family. We have been having a lot of fun together playing, wrestling, running and cuddling. My weekend puppy raiser has also been taking me some nights during the week to hang out with me and I really enjoy my time with them. That’s all for now! Check in with me next month to hear about my adventures in boot camp!
SEPTEMBER 2018 UPDATE
Hey everybody it’s me, Nolan! Back for an update. I’m almost to the finish line of all the work I have put into becoming a service dog, it’s finally coming to the point where I can actually put my skills and knowledge to use. But until then I can update you on how life has been in and out of prison. This month, I have been practicing for the demo my handlers and the team here at CTF will be putting on. My wow for the crowd will be when a random person picks a certain task for my handlers to do and I will copy whatever it is that they do. This is called ‘Like Me’ I am pretty good at copying them. That is also how I learned a lot of what I know, like turning on the lights, opening doors, putting something away, nudging my person when they have anxiety, and lots more! Another thing I have been doing this month is getting to spend more time outside the prison in order to practice being in public more and more since I will end up spending the rest of my life doing it. I enjoy my time both in and out!
