Thor, our (me and my boyfriend’s) 10 year old pitbull comes with us everywhere. One weekend we went to Los Padres National Forest to take a hike. Exploring the scene was a beautiful experience until we got off the beaten track. We came to a pool of water that could only be crossed by a fallen log. I started to panic since Thor was scared to climb on the narrow log and the water was too deep for him to trek through. Without much thought I picked up 70 lb Thor and jumped into the waist high water. My protective instinct kicked in, and I carried him across to safety. I was scared and upset that I put my pup in that position. But you know what? We got through it! I felt a rush of pride because Thor did well, he trusted me without a fuss. And once we were back on the trail, I felt our bond strengthen. The trust between us was palpable and the deepening of our bond felt magical. I’m not saying you have to be in a precarious situation to bond with your pup, but I am saying that bonding with your dog is a wonderful and heartwarming experience. Dogs are man’s best friend, but that doesn't mean that your relationship doesn’t need a little nurturing. Bonding with your dog will strengthen your connection, build trust and loyalty all while you and your pup grow closer.
Dogs are man’s best friend, but that doesn't mean that your relationship doesn’t need a little nurturing. Bonding with your dog will strengthen your connection, build trust and loyalty all while you and your pup grow closer.
In this week’s post we will hand you 5 tips for maximizing the bond between you are your dog:
Here are our top ways to bond with your pup:
Playing/exercising together
When you go out with your dog, it requires that your dog trust you. He/she looks for you for guidance, where to go and what is safe. Furthermore, exercising and/or playing with your dog gives you an opportunity to spend quality fun time with your dog, all enhancing your bond.
Teach your pup tricks
When you teach your dog tricks or give them a job to do, it stimulates the mind and keeps them occupied. Again, the quality time and mental stimulation helps strengthen your bond.
Do a doggy spa day
Treating your dog to an at home doggie day spa is a relaxing opportunity to spend time with your pup. This will give you the opportunity to turn bath time into a relaxing bonding experience.
Have a steady routine
Dogs, not unlike humans, love a steady, predictable routine. This keeps your pup happy, thriving and feeling like they have a safe and steady life. A way to deepen the connection is by giving them regularity.
Give lots of love
Last on our list is giving lots of love and cuddles. This will help with the oxytocin feedback loop. Oxytocin is a hormone, also widely known as the ”love” hormone responsible for such things as bonding. Petting your pup, making eye contact and just giving lots of love will produce oxytocin both in you and your dog, building love, trust and loyalty.
