About Roofus
Hi, my name is Roofus! I was born on February 16, 2018, I am a Dudley Labrador Retriever. My nose has a lighter pigment than other Labs and I also have yellow/green eyes too. My favorite things in life are treats and attention. I’m learning all kinds of things at NLK9s because I get to be a service dog when I grow up. So far, I have learned to answer yes and no questions, how to identify different objects and colors, unzip clothing, walk nice on leash and can make you laugh with my silly play.
From Roofus' Handlers
“ The NLK9s program has been a blessing to my life. Working with all the dogs has been an awesome experience. Roofus lights up all of my days. He doesn’t judge me or look down upon me, he only shows me unconditional love. Being his handler is something I love and something my wife & family can be proud of.....” - Jo
“ I am proud to be a part of the New Life K9s Program. I am ready to begin mending the damaged relationships I have caused in my life. The bond I have developed with the little guy Roofus has made my life matter again. To be able to teach K9s for Veterans and First Responders is truly a blessing....” - Dave

Hi fans and supporters! I hope everyone has had a great month and it hasn’t been too crazy with all the holidays around the corner. This month has been a fun one for me! The hardest part of my month so far has been practicing my patience…My human says it’s important for me to learn to be patient, so when I become a service dog I can do really well. I have also been practicing a whole lot on opening doors. I can pull one open with a tug or even open a heavy one with my paws. The people think it’s really impressive. I am still practicing on how the close the door when I am done, that part isn’t as much fun. I have been really helpful recently and showing how great I will be someday for my future veteran or first responder. I hope this means I have been good and that Santa will bring me lots of presents when he comes! I will let you all know what he brought me next month! See you then and Happy Holidays NLK9s Family and Friends!

Hi everyone! Welcome back and thanks for checking in on my progress. This month has been a big one for me since I am growing and maturing more and more each month. Right now I am 9 months old, and I'm starting to learn more and more. I am getting really good at knowing my colors, especially with figuring out blue vs. yellow. I recently have been getting really good at the game "Red Light Green Light" that my handlers play with me. You get to move on green light but when they say red light you have to be the fastest at freezing. I always win! One of the funnest things I get to do (that most dogs I meet on the outside don’t get to do) is tell my handlers yes or no. My handlers ask me questions like: "Do you want a treat?", "Do you need to go potty?", "Do you want some water?" and many many more. Then, I get to tell them yes or no. I guess most owners don’t know their dogs can understand them. Big things this month, I think my brain could use a break! Gotta go, check in with me again next month!

SEPTEMBER 2018 UPDATE
This month I have had a lot of fun! One way it was fun for me was because the NLK9s ladies decided I needed more time out of the prison, which meant I am now able to go home every night with my weekend puppy raisers. She takes me to all types of places so I can be a good service dog when I grow up. At school I have been learning lots of new things! Carrying things have been another fun thing incorporated in this months learning. I am learning to carry things so that I can help my future person when they need me. I now know how to open doors almost every single time I am asked. I have so much fun and I love helping. Well that's all for now, see you next month!

Roof Roof everybody... I'm really excited to give you an update on how this month has went. I have learned to open doors by tugging them. I am also learning really good manners and how to say hi to people without jumping on them. I know people like when I get excited and jump up to give them kisses, but I am learning to become a service dog one day so manners are important. One example of needing good manners is when I go into restaurants or the movies. I can be very patient now and most of all I know how to make people smile. I have some surprises to share with you next month so be sure to check in...Bye!
