At New Life K9s, every service dog’s journey is thoughtfully designed to prepare them for one purpose: supporting veterans and first responders living with PTSD. From the moment they are selected as puppies to the day they are placed with a handler, each step is intentional, structured, and centered around long-term success.

1. Starting Strong: Selecting the Right Puppies

The journey begins at around 8 weeks of age, when puppies are carefully selected from ethical breeders who prioritize health, temperament, and trainability. These early traits are critical, as not every dog is suited for the demands of service work.

Once selected, puppies enter the program and begin their first stage of development with a strong, healthy foundation.

2. Early Training at California Men’s Colony

From the start, puppies are placed at California Men’s Colony (CMC), where they begin learning essential foundational skills. During this phase, they are introduced to:

  • Basic cues like sit, down, stay, and touch

  • Name recognition and engagement

  • Crate training and potty training

At CMC, our program is uniquely supported by a rehabilitation-based training program, where incarcerated individuals work alongside our professional trainers to help raise and train the dogs. This partnership not only provides consistent, hands-on training for the dogs, but also creates meaningful opportunities for personal growth, responsibility, and skill-building for those involved in the program.

3. Puppy Raisers: Real-World Experience

At around 6 months of age, the dogs transition into homes with dedicated volunteer puppy raisers. This phase is focused on helping the dogs adapt to everyday life and gain real-world experience in a home environment.

Puppy raisers play a vital role in the program by reinforcing:

  • Household manners and routines

  • Exposure to new environments, people, and situations

  • Confidence in public and social settings

As volunteers, puppy raisers provide the consistency, care, and real-life experiences that are essential to each dog’s development. This stage ensures the dogs can successfully integrate into a home environment while continuing to build on their training, setting them up for success as future service dogs.

4. Advanced Training and Evaluation

At approximately 1 year old, the dogs return to CMC to continue and refine their training. During this time, they build reliability in their obedience, strengthen focus, and advance their service skills.

Throughout their entire journey, New Life K9s trainers regularly take the dogs into the community to:

  • Practice skills in real-world environments

  • Evaluate behavior and temperament

  • Increase exposure to everyday situations

This consistent public exposure is essential in preparing dogs to remain calm, focused, and confident in any setting.

It’s important to note that not every dog will complete the program. At any stage, a dog may be released from service training due to temperament, medical concerns, or trainability. This ensures that only the most suitable dogs move forward to become service animals.

5. Ready for Placement

Between 18 months and 2 years of age, dogs that demonstrate the right temperament, reliability, and skill level are ready for placement.

Each dog is thoughtfully matched with a veteran or first responder based on lifestyle, personality, and specific needs. This pairing process is crucial in creating a strong, lasting partnership.

A Life-Changing Partnership

The journey from puppy to service dog is not a quick one—but it is a meaningful one. It takes time, patience, and a dedicated team of breeders, trainers, volunteers, and participants in our rehabilitation program to help each dog reach their full potential.

At New Life K9s, every successful placement represents more than just training—it represents healing, independence, and a renewed sense of purpose for the individuals we serve. Donate today to help further our mission!
